Roland Garros: A Lesson Learned the Hard Way

Dec 19, 2021

In the life of an aspiring tennis player, every decision can significantly impact their journey. Reflecting on my experiences, one particular incident stands out as a pivotal lesson about the importance of prioritizing one's commitments on and off the court.

My doubles match was scheduled to be the 4th match of the day, following other games that started at 9:00 am. A close friend, Carlos, asked me to accompany him to do his laundry, which was relatively close to the courts. Without much thought, I agreed.

In those days, my understanding of the priorities of a tennis player was not fully developed. I still needed to grasp what it truly meant to be prepared.

That fateful day, I learned my lesson the hard way. Carlos and I spent about two hours walking a long street outside of Roland Garros to a laundromat and back. We chatted and laughed about trivial things, typical for two teenagers. I calculated that each match would last around 1.5 to 2 hours, so playing 4th would mean starting in about 5 to 6 hours. However, that day did not follow the script I had in mind.

The first round ended quickly with a 6/1-6/1 score, the second match ended early due to a player's injury, and the third match also concluded swiftly. By the time my match was called, I was nowhere to be found.

When I finally arrived at the club, the first sight was my doubles partner, visibly upset and rightfully so. The tournament director was also waiting for me, ready to express his disappointment. He pointed out that many kids would have been thrilled to have my spot, and I had squandered it due to my lack of preparation.

This day was crucial for me, as it taught me an invaluable lesson: always be ready and prepared. Unfortunately, I had to learn this lesson more than once before it truly sank in.

Key Takeaways:

  1. Understand Priorities: Knowing what to prioritize is essential for success, particularly in competitive sports. Understanding the demands and responsibilities that come with being a tennis player is crucial.

  2. Time Management: Efficiently managing time ensures that all commitments, especially important matches, are met with adequate preparation.

  3. Preparation: Being fully prepared, both mentally and physically, is fundamental. This involves being present at the venue well in advance and engaging in the necessary pre-match routines.

  4. Learning from Mistakes: Mistakes are part of the learning process. Each error provides an opportunity to improve and grow, but it's vital to absorb the lessons they offer.

  5. Accountability: Taking responsibility for one's actions and understanding their consequences on teammates and others is a mark of maturity and professionalism.

In conclusion, the journey of a tennis player, or any athlete, is fraught with challenges that demand a clear understanding of priorities, meticulous preparation, and the ability to learn from mistakes. This experience was a turning point, instilling in me the importance of readiness and the value of every opportunity on the court.
